Formed in 1863, The FA is the oldest football association in the world and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the amateur and professional game in its territory. The FA sanctions all competitive football matches within its remit at national level, and indirectly at local level through the County Football Associations. It runs numerous competitions, the most famous of which is the FA Cup.

The Problem

Encouraged by the success of the previous two years’ competitions, the FA and the BBC knew they needed to develop a fault-tolerant, easy to use website that could facilitate the entire competition, from the public registering and managing teams to the FA and the BBC managing venues, schedules and sharing teams’ progression through the competition.

They put their trust in Blacklight Software to develop and deliver such a solution.

The Solution

Expert developers at Blacklight Software worked closely with the FA and the BBC to design, develop and deliver a robust, fault-tolerant .net bespoke site that enables:

  • Members of the public to register
  • Team managers to manage teams
  • The FA manages: individual and team profiles; venues; schedules and team progression from initial rounds through to the final
  • Robust communication, so that, e.g., the FA could communicate with teams via email to send cut-off dates, reminders and venue details
  • Venues to login and input results
  • Access and editing from mobile devices (so that results could be captured in real-time)

Technologies used include:

  • .NET
  • SQL server platform
  • Real-time synchronised data.
